I think about this all the time. Our society has yet to iron down the same values for equality with the American Indian as it puts toward other civil rights groups in America. Re: cowboys and indians, could you even conceive of a slavery party? Because that’s what it is, but I can guarantee you’re not going to have a “master vs. slave” party. As a child, I really loved Disney’s animated Peter Pan (as well as the one with Mary Martin!), but it’s pretty ridiculous how they conceived American Indians in the Disney portrayal (“What Made the Red Man Red?” Seriously?). This sort of discussion is still really hard to have with people, moreso than bringing up ”Retarded” for me, but it’s just as important. If we don’t speak up against systems of oppression, the wheels will continue to turn and we will continue to validate their existences.
